Last year I set a year 5 class the task of writing newspaper articles about a school camp. One of the best articles that was submitted had such wonderfully imaginative language and great use of alliteration and imagery. I found out that a great deal of the language the student used had been learnt from playing the online game World Of Warcraft. I think that playing this game had boosted his vocabulary and use of language techniques.

This is an interesting observation Kevin – the impact of gaming on language acquisition and extension. It is particularly evident with boys I think. It does challenge our perception of ‘appropriate reading’ in the classroom – boys often prefer non fiction, for example. Others read the manuals of strategy games such as Warhammer and yet are reluctant to pick up a book in the classroom!!

There are some companies now using what they know about gaming in the classroom. Why can’t learning be engaging and fun? Have you seen some of the learning objects put out by the Curriculum Corporation? Worth looking at.
